Republicans seem only able to accept one part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision: The broad outline of racial equality. That’s only one part of what Dr. King was working for. Dr. King also had a vision of economic justice for all people, a world in which a hard day’s work would be rewarded with fair pay, in which war would come to an end, in which health care would be a universally recognized human right.
This isn’t the first time that the idea of the Gandhi-King exchange has been proposed in Congress. Similar legislation was introduced in 2009 – when Democrats controlled both houses of Congress, but the bill was not accepted and promoted by Democratic Party leadership.
When Erik Paulsen sent out invitations to tomorrow’s reception, he openly informed the potential guests that they should come bearing gifts of money for him. Apparently, Congressman Paulsen believes that the time has come when the United States of America needs leaders who are in love with money, rather than justice.
