Cecil Bothwell, who is campaigning to succeed Heath Shuler as the representative of North Carolina’s 11th congressional district, has applied for an endorsement by the Progressive Democrats of America. One of the most significant items in Bothwell’s agenda, as identified in his application to the PDA, is the reduction of wasteful spending through the military.

Heath Shuler is challenging Nancy Pelosi for the position of Speaker of the House on the grounds that the Democrats should be led by someone who will apply the failed Blue Dog strategy to the entire Democratic caucus.

Not a single one of the Democrats who voted against the health care reform bill has a progressive legislative rating about 50 percent.

To vote for this bill was to insult the Constitution of the United States of America, and in doing so, to insult the USA itself. A vote in favor of this bill is a betrayal of the Oath of Office every member of Congress has taken. It is unpatriotic, and a grave breach of trust.

Many of these representatives are progressive Democrats, but some of them are right wing Republicans. Hank Johnson included people from both sides of the political spectrum because he realized that the human tragedy of the fighting in northern Uganda merited a unified approach that transcended domestic politics.

Do Christians really believe that the Bible is such an anemic piece of literature that it needs the support of a nanny government to coddle it and protect it from competing ideas?
