They’ll Protect Maple Syrup, But Not Your Constitutional Rights

Posted on October 22 2011 by Congress Watcher

Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand refused to take a stand for Americans’ constitutional rights this year, but they’re working hard to defend the integrity of pancake syrup. Seriously, they think that distinguishing between Aunt Jemima and maple syrup is more important than protecting the privacy of American citizens.

Obama Folds, 19 Senators Stand Firm On Discrimination

Posted on October 13 2010 by Congress Watcher

Eighteen Democrats and one independent from the United States have signed a letter urging the President and the Attorney General to return to a commitment to equality in the United States. The letter asks Attorney General Eric Holder to allow the decision that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is unconstitutional to stand.

Sander Hicks Brings Satanic Conspiracy Theories To Green Party

Posted on April 24 2010 by Congress Watcher

I’d like to hear from other members of the New York Greens how they think that conspiracy theories about Satan and September 11 are going to help them successfully challenge Charles Schumer and expand their political party.

Chuck Schumer Talks Tough on American Jobs While Sending them to China

Posted on April 6 2010 by Congressional Aid

Senator Charles Schumer went on a public relations offensive yesterday, stepping before the microphones to declare that “To me, nothing is more important than jobs.” Standing in front of American factory workers at a “New York based company that sees its sales and supply chains undercut by Chinese imports,” he gestured back toward them and [...]

Senate Democrats Defend Bush Patriot Act Abuses

Posted on October 2 2009 by Congress Watcher

The Senate Judiciary Committee was faced with a crucial ethical test yesterday, and most of the committee failed. The test came during a special executive meeting to consider whether to reauthorize the infamous Patriot Act, a law that was passed in a rush, without any senator even reading the bill, granting the Executive Branch extreme [...]

Pro-Insurance Democrats Kill Public Option

Posted on September 29 2009 by Congress Watcher

Democrats may have the majority of seats in the Senate, but the Republicans still appear to have the control. The Democratic-Republican distinction appears not to have anything near the meaning as the progressive-regressive split, and the progressives are clearly in the minority.

Senate Protects Stimulus For Sign Makers

Posted on September 17 2009 by Congress Watcher

The signs declaring that projects in certain areas were funded through stimulus legislation usually include the name of a United States senator or member of the House of Representatives. These signs amount to a form of political campaigning, demonstrating that a member of Congress is able to bring money into constituents’ communities.

Drill Baby Drill… Maple Trees?

Posted on March 10 2009 by Congress Watcher

Making 300 million dollars from 20 million dollars through the Maple Tapping Access Program Act sounds promising, but I wonder about the extra energy costs that would come from boiling all that sap.

Hillary Clinton Refuses To Commit To The Constitution

Posted on July 6 2008 by Congress Watcher

The FISA Amendments Act is profoundly, thoroughly unconstitutional and anticonstitutional. It makes the fourth amendment in the Bill of Rights irrelevant, completely ignores the ban on ex post facto laws, slams the concept of equal protection under the law, and generally wrecks the system of checks and balances between what are supposed to be three coequal branches of government. So, why won’t Hillary Clinton declare her opposition to this terrible law?

Barack Obama Abandons Senate While Filibuster Flounders

Posted on June 25 2008 by Congress Watcher

Obama promised last Friday that he would be in the Senate. “I will work in the Senate,” he said, to remove retroactive immunity from the legislation. Today, Barack Obama wasn’t there.
