January 31 Campaign Finance Deadline Will Bring Only Partial Story

Posted on January 22 2012 by Congress Watcher

Thanks to the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling, the most important stories of the 2012 congressional elections are likely to never be told.

Kucinich Proposes Constitutional Amendment For Public Funding Of Elections

Posted on January 20 2012 by Congress Watcher

The legislation, would, if passed, begin the process of the ratification of a constitutional amendment to require all federal political campaigns to be funded solely from public sources. Even candidates’ own money could not be used for campaigns. Independent expenditures, under this proposed constitutional amendment, would be prohibited.

Constitutional Amendment On Voting And Campaign Finance Proposed

Posted on December 27 2011 by Congress Watcher

Under the proposed amendment to the Constitution, Congress would have the power to create a system for public funding of electoral campaigns, and no funding of campaigns outside that system could take place, and Election Day would become a holiday whenever federal elections take place.

Vern Buchanan Faces Heat On Campaign Law Breaking

Posted on December 22 2011 by Congress Watcher

The Federal Election Commission has concluded that Vern Buchanan “more likely than not” broke the law. A FEC report presents evidence substantiating the complaint against Buchanan, contradicting Buchanan’s claims that he hadn’t done anything wrong.

Mark Neumann Colluding With Lobbyists Even Before Election Time

Posted on December 4 2011 by Congress Watcher

Wisconsin Republican Mark Neumann is campaigning to replace Herb Kohl in the United States Senate in next year’s election. Neumann criticizes other politicians easily, saying that they’re “threatening it all by pandering”. Yet, even before he’s gained his own party’s nomination, Neumann is pandering himself – to corporate lobbyists. The day after tomorrow, Neumann will [...]

Big Liquor Plays Safe With Republicans And Democrats

Posted on November 27 2011 by Congress Watcher

It isn’t just Orrin Hatch who’s taking money from Diageo liquors. The Every Republican Is Crucial PAC took a check from the Diageo PAC in August, a few weeks after the Republican Operation to Secure and Keep a Majority PAC took Diageo’s whiskey-scented cash.

Cliff Stearns Plays Lobbyist Games

Posted on November 24 2011 by Congress Watcher

The latest incarnation of this game will be played at Verizon Center on Tuesday, November 29. No, I’m not talking about the match between the Washington Capitals and the St. Louis Blues. I’m talking about the matchmaking that will be going on in a luxury box where Cliff Stearns will be meeting with lobbyists who are paying money to his re-election campaign in exchange for access to the Congressman.

McGovern Constitutional Amendment Ends Corporate Personhood

Posted on November 16 2011 by Congress Watcher

If passed and ratified, a proposed constitutional amendment would end the legal status of corporations as persons, and stop the current practice of unlimited independent congressional campaign funding with money that comes from undisclosed sources. Many Democrats in Congress have done a lot of talking about taking a stand against the idea of corporate personhood. Now that they have the opportunity to take concrete action on the issue, what are they actually doing?

Rob Woodall Receiving Business-Organized Campaign Contributions

Posted on November 14 2011 by Congress Watcher

There are only 75 individual contributions to the 2012 re-election campaign of U.S. Representative Rob Woodall. Six of those 75 contributions have come from Pull-A-Part executives. The chances of this happening randomly are absurdly small.

Blake Farenthold Takes Money From Lobbyist Firm Executive

Posted on October 30 2011 by Congress Watcher

Lobbyist Henry Ryan isn’t one of Farenthold’s constituents. He lives in Washington D.C., not Texas. So why is Ryan giving money to Blake Farenthold?
