Nothing in HR 3600 prevents a pastor or any member of a congregation from exercising their free speech, including the use of the name of their affiliation.

What the bill does is simply limit the tax exemption of churches and their non-profits, which is a form of government benefit, as are the exemptions allowed church properties by many state and local jurisdictions. Generally, church properties may not be used for business purposes, leased, etc, but are confined to the place of active worship, and immediately adjacent pastoral housing (although law varies from state to state).

By the way our founders were men of Christian faith, but they supported vigorously the "wall of separation," in many respects a result of the colonial experience - a mix of civil government and religion - of oppression, and of taxes in behalf of s single faith. In these early days faiths like Quakers and Catholics were not viewed as Christian - Christian meant protestant, and that term narrowly interpreted.

Paul, YOU should read the Constitution. In Article 1 Section 8 clearly states that Congress has the authority to provide for the general welfare. The Tenth Amendment in no way overrules that section.

Also, at the end of Section 8 of Article one, the Constitution states, that Congress shall have the power "To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof."

Translation: If there's a department or officer employed by the federal government, Congress can fund that department or officer, whatever its jurisdiction is.

I am all in favor of safety for children walking and riding their bikes to school, but where, in the Constitution of the United States, does it allow the federal government use my tax money to design and/or build local streets and sidewalks? Where is that power delegated??? That is strictly a local concern, even if it is "for the children". See amendment X. Congress critters should spend a few minutes every day reading the Constitution.

Oklahoma certainly has its share of right-wing radicals. When I moved to an apartment in South Tulsa, I received a "welcome-to-the-neighborhood" package -- from the KKK! The return address was from a PO Box in Owasso.

I was teaching high school the day the OKC bomb exploded. In the week after the explosion, there were calls for retribution against the 'Arabs' who certainly attacked the federal building. Indeed, there were verbal and physical attacks against people with darker skin...not necessarily only people originating from the Middle East either!

Representative Cole does not seem to have strong critical thinking skills (which, by the way, the GOP in the state to the south of OK, in their 2012 state platform for education, has determined should NOT be taught in schools).

Representative Cole exists in the midst of extremism. I am concerned about whether Rep. Cole was unable to comprehend McCollum's statement or whether he simply spoke without thinking in an attempt to remain relevant in a nation who's populace rejected his party's resistance to change.
