They come from Maine and New York, the two biggest maple syrup states in the USA. So, these four U.S. Senators are willing to go the extra mile to protect the integrity of maple syrup. This week, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand introduced S. 1742, the Maple Agriculture Protection and Law Enforcement. The law would make it a felony crime to produce a sweet syrup that falsely claims to be maple syrup.
But, just a few months ago, when it came to protecting the constitutional rights of actual human beings, these senators walked away from the fight. They voted to extend the Patriot Act without any reforms, even though it’s been clearly demonstrated that the Patriot Act has been used by the federal government to engage in substantial spying against American citizens who aren’t at all suspected of having any link to terrorism.
The Patriot Act is against the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution’s guarantee of protection from unreasonable search and seizure. But, Collins, Snowe, Schumer and Gillibrand care less about that than pancake syrup.
