Is Minor Troop Reduction Appropriate Response To Afghanistan?
The war in Afghanistan is the longest war in American history – and one of the costliest, too. American soldiers have been in Afghanistan for a decade. Over a thousand Americans have been killed in the war, and half of a trillion dollars has been spent. Yet, the Taliban remain undefeated, and the American-installed government has instituted Islamic theocratic laws of the same sort that the Taliban themselves became infamous for.
Now, Senator Carl Levin has made news with a demand that the war in Afghanistan be altered. His demand is being described as a dramatic departure from previous Afghanistan policy.
The demand: A reduction of American soldiers in Afghanistan by only 15 percent. “That’s what I think would be considered significant,” Levin said.
With opposition like this, the war in Afghanistan could well continue for another decade.
