Who Voted Against Safety Regulations for Offshore Drilling

Last week, many heard that H.R. 1229, a law that would force new offshore drilling permits through to approval by the Department of the Interior at an extremely rapid pace, regardless of whether there will be the capacity to handle them. What was not paid close attention to were the attempts to improve the rash and risky law through amendment.

Consider the Amendment 1 to H.R. 1229, a proposed change to the bill “to require safety review of permits to take into consideration all applicable safety, environmental and fisheries laws”. As long as new drilling is to be pushed through in unwise haste, it should at least be conducted according the the law, keeping workers and waters safe.

The author and sponsor of the the amendment, Jared Polis, noted that H.R. 1229 “fails to make mention of and omits requiring the Secretary to ensure that critical environmental and economic laws are adhered to, a prolific problem leading up to the Deepwater Horizon spill,” and commented, “Following last year’s BP Deepwater Horizon disaster, one would think that a foundational and critical element of any bill related to offshore deepwater oil drilling would be to improve our safety and environmental safeguards based on the lessons that we learned the hard way from a horrific national tragedy, costing jobs and reducing health and damaging the environment.”

So, the House of Representatives approved Amendment 1, right? No, unfortunately not. The House of Representatives rejected protections that might have saved the lives of the workers on the Deepwater Horizon and prevented the tremendous oil spill that resulted from its explosion.

The House members who voted to block environmental and safety protections to keep our people and natural resources safe are the following:
