John Boehner and Cory Gardner Break their First Promise on Day One in Office
“We will govern differently than past Congresses of both parties. We will require that every bill contain a citation of Constitutional authority. We will give all Representatives and citizens at least three days to read the bill before a vote.” — GOP Pledge to America, September 22 2010
“We’ve developed a 2010 plan, things we believed that if they were adopted in 2010, we’d have a better country. Everything from transparency and accountability, meaning the 72 hours of posting legislation and amendments so everyone has the chance to read it.” — Representative-Elect Cory Gardner, November 9 2010
“To my colleagues in the majority, my message is this: we will honor our Pledge to America.” — GOP Speaker of the House John Boehner, January 5 2010
On January 5, 2010, John Boehner was sworn in as Speaker of the House and Cory Gardner was sworn in as a new U.S. Representative. Both swiftly moved to vote for H.Res. 5, a bill to institute new House Rules. Final voting on passing this bill was completed exactly five hours after the 112th Congress reached a quorum and was gaveled into session.
Six hours after the passage of H.Res. 5, the congressional database Thomas still has not made the text of the bill available for public review.
Boehner and Gardner have passed a professional milestone, their first broken promise of the 112th Congress, in rapid fashion.
