Christians Show Highest Ignorance Of House of Representatives
A survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life received a great deal of attention earlier this week because of one of its findings: That Atheists know more about Christianity Than Christians Do. The survey touched upon many other subjects besides religious literacy, however. It examined political knowledge as well.
Given the heavy use of Christian belief as a religious tool in this year’s congressional campaigns – through anti-Muslim activism, for example, the accuracy of Christian knowledge of basic political facts is especially relevant. As it turns out, Christians are the most ignorant religious group in the United States.
The chart below shows the response to a question on the Pew survey, asking respondents which political party controls the U.S. House of Representatives. Christians were by far the most ignorant of this fact. Over twice as many Christians as atheists didn’t know which political party currently controls the lower house of Congress.
