Southern Blue Dogs Vote Against Jobs Bill

Posted on August 12 2010 by Congress Watcher

In just a couple of weeks, America’s children will begin to start a new year at school. Public schooling protects our nation’s economy, by allowing parents the time to work and by preparing a new generation to engage in cultural and scientific innovation.

A few days ago, it seemed that, because of the recession caused by mismanagement and fraud in corporate boardrooms and on Wall Street, millions of children would go into overcrowded classrooms without adequate educational resources. Then, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1586, the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act.

In addition to protecting American education and providing good jobs to large numbers of Americans, H.R. 1586 assures Medicaid payments to large numbers of Americans who would otherwise have had to go without health care.

H.R. 1586 passed the House and was signed into law this week, but not without the opposition of three Democrats who joined the GOP in asserting that America’s schoolchildren were a “special interest” that shouldn’t be helped. All three of these Democrats came from the South, and all three were members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of Republican-aligned right wing congressional Democrats.

They were:

Bobby Bright
Jim Cooper
Gene Taylor
