This week, U.S. Representative Devin Nunes introduced H.R. 5899, legislation he entitled the Roadmap for America’s Energy Future. The legislation would require the federal government to allow offshore drilling in any location that could bring oil companies profit.
Justifying such extreme expansion of offshore drilling rigs along the coasts of the USA, H.R. 5899 declares that “Development of domestic oil and gas re-sources can be accomplished in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.”
This week has seen a new oil spill of about one million gallons in the Gulf of Mexico, which will remain uncapped for at least 10 more days, and a oil spill that has fouled a huge length of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, even as the the Deepwater Horizon oil spill continues to defy cleanup efforts. These events suggest that presumption of safe petroleum exploitation cannot be accepted at face value.
Perhaps the $30,250 that Devin Nunes has taken from oil industry PACs over the last year and a half is influencing his perception of what’s safe.
