If Earl Pomeroy is one of Pelosi’s Puppets, Nancy Pelosi is a Conservative

The Republican National Committee publishes an attack page this week, and it’s hard to tell whether the subject is Rep. Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota or Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:

Meet Pelosi’s Puppets: Congressional Democrats who take marching orders from their Puppet Master, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, instead of you, the American people….

PUPPET: Rep. Earl Pomeroy – ND:… Voted With Nancy Pelosi 97.4% Of The Time.

The source the Republican National Committee provides for this claim, the Washington Post Votes Database, does not provide information on how often a member of Congress votes with Nancy Pelosi (who as Speaker has cast only 83 roll call votes to date in the 111th Congress). That database only provides information on how often a member of Congress votes with a majority of the members of his or her party. The Republican Party’s statistic appears to be of vaporous origins.

If we pay attention to these politicians’ actual records, the pairing hardly makes strategic sense for the Republicans. The Republican Party has dedicated a great deal of effort to the task of characterizing Nancy Pelosi as the most extreme of liberals. But on our scorecard of progressive and conservative legislative actions in the House of Representatives, Earl Pomeroy earns a net score of just +3 out of a possible 100 points. Only 21 of the 256 Democrats in the House have a more conservative record than Earl Pomeroy, placing Pomeroy among the most conservative 10% of Democrats in the House. Earl Pomeroy has failed to support a single piece of pro-choice or gay rights legislation in the 111th Congress. Pomeroy has voted to extend the Patriot Act, he voted against ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, he voted for a costly F-35 system that the U.S. military does not want, and he voted for the Stupak Amendment to prohibit health insurance companies from offering women abortion coverage, even if women would pay for such coverage entirely out of their own pocketbooks.

If Rep. Pomeroy is really Speaker Pelosi’s puppet — a notion which is factually unsupported and facially doubtful — then Nancy Pelosi must be rather conservative indeed.
