Kucinich Words On Oil Not Matched With Action

Posted on May 27 2010 by Congress Watcher

Once again, Congressman Dennis Kucinich has given an eloquent speech on the floor of the House of Representatives about the need for a change in energy policy to prevent offshore drilling disasters such as the one currently fouling the Gulf of Mexico.

Kucinich said yesterday, “When we look at the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, we learn how far we must journey to reconcile with nature. The false doctrine of subduing the natural world puts us in danger of extinction because it ultimately attacks the precondition of human existence and because it separates us from an understanding of the essential interconnectedness of all life.

So we’re lulled into distancing ourselves from the oil disaster, from its effects on the natural world, from its effects on future generations. Nature’s God is not just up there, but it’s in all of us. And only when we truly understand the deep significance of the Deepwater Horizon disaster will we be prepared to take a new direction not only with our energy policies but with our way of life.”

Kucinich seems to be criticizing other members of Congress for not being “prepared to take a new direction”. But what about Representative Kucinich? Is he prepared?

Irregular Times noted last week that, despite Kucinich’s talk about opposing offshore drilling, he hadn’t taken any action to follow it up. This week, the same remains true.

A strong bill to stop expansion of offshore drilling has been introduced into the House of Representatives. It’s H.R. 5353, the No New Drilling Act. Representative Maxine Waters added her name as a cosponsor of H.R. 5353 this week. Dennis Kucinich did not. Kucinich seems to be pretending that the legislation doesn’t exist.

So what has Congressman Kucinich done since the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon? Well, Kucinich has written a bill. Two days ago, Kucinich introduced H.R. 5390: “To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 13301 Smith Road in Cleveland, Ohio, as the ‘David John Donafee Post Office Building’.”

Mr. Kucinich, if you have time to work on renaming a post office, you have time to cosponsor legislation to end offshore drilling.

But Eric, he HASN’T DONE ANYTHING. He’s not walking. He’s just talking.
