Afghanistan: The Anti-War Minority
Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted on a resolution introduced last week by Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich that would require President Obama to end American involvement in the war in Afghanistan by the end of this year, removing all American soldiers from that nation by December 31.
In the popular conception, the Democratic Party is often thought of as the party of peace, whereas the Republican Party is conceived of as the party of war.
The vote yesterday in the House of Representatives reflected that model to some extent, in that the percentage of Republicans who voted against the resolution was higher than the percentage of Democrats who did. However, the percentage of Democrats who voted in favor of withdrawal from Afghanistan was not high. Only 60, about one in four Democrats, supported the Kucinich resolution. They were joined by 5 Republicans.
