Paul Hodes Dissembles Before his Vote For the Patriot Act

Posted on February 28 2010 by Congressional Aid

Paul Hodes, U.S. Representative from New HampshirePaul Hodes has some explaining to do.

Hearing that a bill to reauthorize the Patriot Act was being prepared for passage in the House of Representatives, a constituent of the New Hampshire Democrat wrote to him:

I note with considerable alarm that, in spite of the supposed “shutdown” of the nation’s capital due to snowfall, Congress is still moving quite swiftly to quietly re-authorize the expiring provisions of the so-called “USA Patriot Act.” This appears to be happening with the whole-hearted approval of both Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Boehner. President Obama has indicated he will also sign.

Naturally this is going on without any fanfare or media inquiry, and anyone who raises concerns is –predictably– accused of “supporting terrorism” and “endangering American lives” and all the other usual phrases.

You once stated quite categorically that you were firmly against the USA PATRIOT Act when another party was in control of Congress and the White House, calling it “an assault on Constitutional rights and American civil liberties.” I want to know if you are in fact still opposed to it. Please indicate which way you intend to vote so that I may decide on my 2010 campaign donations and voting decisions accordingly.

Paul Hodes responded to his constituent with a statement dated February 19 that “There is currently no legislation to extend the PATRIOT Act before the House of Representatives.”

Just six days later, Paul Hodes voted to reauthorize the Patriot Act.
