John Shimkus Shrugs Off Constituents, Flies to Florida for Lobbyists
Last year, when Illinois congressman John Shimkus was invited by his constituents to a discussion on climate change, he didn’t show up.
John Shimkus is, on the other hand, an attending guest of honor at a weekend-long bash thrown for him this Friday in Orlando, Florida. Shimkus represents neither the city of Orlando nor the state of Florida. He does, on the other hand, represent the interests of media giant Universal Studios as a member of the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, the jurisdiction of which includes, “but not limited to all telecommunication and information transmission by broadcast, radio, wire, microwave, satellite, or other mode.” Did I mention that this party, at which attending lobbyists are expected to write checks to Shimkus of $1,000 to $2,500, is being hosted by Universal Studios at its Orlando resort?
It just goes to show you that those Illinois constituents don’t know their political strategy. If you want your congressman to meet with you, start a large media conglomerate first. Then take out your checkbook.
