Jared Polis Opposes Expanding War
U.S. Representative Jared Polis, who has been elected by people living around Boulder, Colorado to work for them in the House of Representatives, is emerging as a strong voice against the expansion of the American military occupation of Afghanistan.
“I now oppose an ongoing occupation of Afghanistan,” Polis said earlier this month. “In meeting after meeting, I have been shown by generals and statesmen what we are doing in Afghanistan, how it could take decades, might not work, and is fraught with risks. In response, I ask the same repeated question: Why? With all the ambiguity clouding the outcome, the case has not been conclusively made that the possibilities are more favorable with an increase of 30,000 troops.”
Polis presents the concept that, when Americans are presented with a choice between continuing to fight a long war, or ending the war, it’s the responsibility of those who wish to continue the fighting to prove that the war can reasonably be expected to have a positive conclusion. If that proof is not forthcoming, as it is not with Afghanistan, Polis favors ending the war.
