Paul Broun Resurrects Bill to Create Big Government Intervention in the Womb
Who says Republicans are the party of small government? Paul Broun and 55 of his fellow Republicans are promoting the radical expansion of government power with great vigor. In the 110th Congress, Broun introduced a bill that would have imbued any fertilized egg with “all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood.” In the 111th Congress, H.R. 227 attempts to accomplish the same. By declaring full status for all zygotes as fully legal persons, regardless of function, defect or viability, Broun’s legislation sets the stage for a variety of government interventions in the lives of women and families, including bodily inspections and mandated interventions, tax status changes, increased health insurance premiums and criminal child neglect charges for in vitro fertilization failures. While Republicans hold organized rallies with signs declaring “Government Hands Off My Health Care!,” a significant portion of those same Republicans are planning to get the Government’s hands all over your womb.
