Progressive Democratic Challenge Against Glenn Nye in 2010

Posted on December 14 2009 by Congress Watcher

Freshman U.S. Representative Glenn Nye has been working a dangerous strategy for gaining re-election in 2010. Elected in 2008 on the basis of grassroots support from progressive Democrats in Virginia’s 2nd congressional district, Nye turned Blue Dog after the election, using his power to block progressive Democratic legislation such as health care reform and serious efforts to deal with climate change.

glenn nyeAs a member of Congress, Nye has refused to support accountability for Bush Administration officials. He’s voted against unemployment benefits. He hasn’t supported legislation to protect Appalachian mountains from destructive and dangerous mining practices. Nye has even voted to protect executives from failed financial firms who take government bailout money and then take obscenely large bonuses anyway.

It was the vote against health care reform that finally pushed one of Nye’s Democratic constituents to issue the following video letter. In the video, the constituent cites the health care vote as a good reason to withdraw his support from Nye in the 2010 election. It’s at the end of the video that the gauntlet is thrown down: An effort to convince the 2006 Democratic congressional candidate, Phil Kellam to challenge Congressman Nye in the Democratic primary.

Glenn Nye seems to have been betting that, if he just tried to please Republican voters by opposing health care reform, he would avoid any serious challenge from the 2010 election. Instead, the opposite has taken place. 5 candidates have announced their intention to run for the Republican nomination to take the district’s House seat from Nye. Voting like a Republican has been no source of protection for Glenn Nye. Democrats are furious at him, and Republicans would rather just go ahead and vote for an actual Republican candidate.

Will Phil Kellam take advantage of Nye’s weakness, and bring a stronger Democratic voice to the 2010 election?

In November Go to the polls and vote for Phil Kellam as your write in candidate. Easy!

A write-in candidate is a candidate in an election whose name does not appear on the ballot, but for whom voters may vote nonetheless by writing in the person’s name. Write-in candidacies are sometimes a result of a candidate being legally or procedurally ineligible to run under his own party.

I am a woman who considers my self a reasonably intelelligant person and for the love of god I can not understand why we cannot come to a reasonable solution for health care. When trying to pass a bill on health leave it as health care and NOTHING ELSE. The heath care companies are raising their rates and have taken over most health health care providers. Sentara ownes most PCP practices in the area. In the past we have broken up any service related providers.
The phone companies were forced to provide access to competitores and this allowed for the companies to campaign for the consumer. This gave the consumer control of who they wanted to provide their service.SENTAR not only has a monoply on the Insurance company but they have bought all the Hospitals and just about all the PCP practices as well. PCP are given a list of the practices who participate and the are encouraged to refer to them. Small practices cannot compete with Sentara. This is a perfect example of a big business talking control of the consumers right to choose their own doctors. It is very clear that Senatar has some of our own elected officials in their back pocket. Another example , the practice that I have worked at for the last 30 years, wanted to have thier own facility for doing MRI the doctors went to Richmond to lobby for this and were denied saying there was enough coverge for this area. Sentara owns all of the facilities here. There are several reasons showing that Sentars is a force to be reckon with. So why is nobody doing anything about this. Our congress men need to put some competion to reign SeThis comment ntara this will allow patients to see their doctor.

Back to the Health Bill. Why is the bill over 1000 pages long. Any thing that does not have to with Health Care should not be added to the bill. We should have fair competition for all health providers.
