Lisa Murkowski’s Offshore Drilling Disneyland
During a hearing of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources today, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski gushed about how wonderful offshore drilling for oil can be. Trying to demonstrate her enthusiasm for drilling for oil along America’s shores, Murkowski commented, “It’s better than Disneyland!”
Offshore drilling is better than Disneyland? How so? Does Senator Murkowski often take children to have fun on oil rigs in Alaskan seas? Do they have rides, like the Oil Slick Skimmer or Fire Mountain?
Maybe the thing that makes offshore drilling better than Disneyland, for a politician like Lisa Murkowski at least, is that while Disneyland requires people to pay a steep price for every visit, offshore oil drilling companies are willing to pay politicians to take a ride. Senator Lisa Murkowski, for example, has taken $36,250 from Edison Chouest Offshore. She’s taken $31,646 from Constellation Energy. She’s taken $16,250 from Van Ness Feldman, a law firm that specializes in helping big oil companies get around regulations so that they can drill baby drill. ExxonMobil has given Murkowski $15,000. Chevron gave her $10,000, and Valero gave her another $10,000.
Compared to that, what has Disneyland done for Lisa Murkowski? They haven’t given her any money at all! And Disneyland charges $2,147.50 just to stay at the park for four days.
Yes, at least for Lisa Murkowski, offshore oil drilling is much, much, much better than Disneyland.
