The Myth of Democracy in Arkansas
How can Vic Snyder get away with slacking off on the introduction of legislation to fix what ails this country?
How can John Boozman get away with telling struggling Americans in the midst of the greatest recession of a generation to go to hell?
How does Marion Berry manage to get re-elected after getting caught in bed with the pharmacy lobby?
Mike Ross voted to legalize Big Brother spying on innocent people. How did he manage to get re-elected?
This is where we bring to consideration the dirty secret on which these politicians would rather you didn’t dwell. Did you know that not one of them actually won their election contest last year? It’s true, and yet they remain in office. How could that happen? It could happen because not one of these members of Congress actually had an election contest to win.
Each and every one of the U.S. Representatives in the state of Arkansas ran for his seat utterly uncontested. Voters didn’t have a choice. They could either vote for the anointed candidate, or… vote for the anointed candidate.
Somebody tell me again about the great American virtue of representative democracy. Where does the democracy part fit in?
