Charles Boustany In An Offshore Pocket
It’s disconcerting when the legislative agenda of a member of Congress matches up with the campaign donations that politician receives. Such is the case with Charles Boustany, Republican U.S. Representative from Louisiana.
Among the legislative items at the center of Representative Boustany’s agenda are opposition to Democrats’ health care reform legislation and support for expanded offshore drilling for oil. Is it a coincidence, then that the group that’s the 2nd largest contributor to Boustany’s 2010 re-election campaign is the fossil fuel industry? Is it just dumb luck that the 3rd largest contributor to Boustany’s campaign is the insurance industry, which opposes health care reform, and the largest professional group among all of Boustany’s contributors are “health professionals”?
I don’t want to commit an act of libel against Congressman Boustany, but I believe that the readers here are intelligent enough to perceive where the ethical conflicts lie.
