Jackie Speier Speaks Out Against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
This week, U.S. Representative Jackie Speier spoke out strongly against the policy commonly known as Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – an outdated arrangement that compels military leaders to kick out soldiers and sailors who are discovered to be homosexual, at the very same time that the military is having a difficult time recruiting qualified Americans.
Speier rose to the floor of the House of Representatives and said, “We have all heard the tired arguments of why all Americans who choose to serve should not be allowed to serve, but those arguments belong to an intolerant past. The men and women who make up today’s Armed Forces are modern, highly informed Americans who have grown up in an era more accepting of individual differences.”
Speier is doing more than just talking, however, when it comes to changing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Speier has joined the other members of the LGBT Caucus in cosponsoring H.R. 1283, legislation that would eliminate the discriminator policy.
