Judy Chu and Congressman Clay Join Respect for Marriage
Last Saturday, we reported on a problem in the Democratic Party represented by the Respect for Marriage Act, H.R. 3567. The legislation, which would restore the federal government’s leadership in promoting marriage equality by repealing last century’s infamous Defense of Marriage Act, is supported by only one third of all Democrats in the House of Representatives.
Yesterday, new U.S. Representative from California Judy Chu and Missouri’s William Lacy Clay joined the list of cosponsors of H.R. 3567. Unfortunately, that’s a drop in the bucket, considering the extremely long list of Democrats who still refuse to recognize the legal right of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender Americans to live in equality with their heterosexual neighbors.
Thanks to William Lacy Clay and Judy Chu for doing the right thing, to protect the legal rights of all Americans. Shame on the many Democrats who have yet to cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act.
