Supporting A Constitutional Education
Yesterday was Constitution Day, and to commemorate the occasion, Representative Elijah Cummings introduced H.R. 3591, the Constitution and Citizenship Day Act, a bill that creates four million dollars for competitive grants to educational programs that teach about the Constitution. The bill doesn’t just support education about the Constitution of the United States. It also funds programs to teach students about the constitutions of state governments as well.
Cosponsors of the bill are:
Eleanor Holmes Norton
John Conyers
Diane Watson
Charles Rangel
Kendrick Meek
Maxine Waters
Donald Payne
Andre Carson
Melvin Watt
All of these cosponsors are Democrats. Will any Republicans sign on in support of the Constitution?

It is hard to imagine the impact this bill when passed will have if states got just 50% of the voter registration results Maryland received after having passed it in ’07. Between 2006 and 2008, a 90% increase in new 17 & 18 year old voters in MD. Wow!
