Paul Broun Opposes Jesus On Tort Reform
Congressman Paul Broun likes to promote himself as a Christian politician who will take Christian values to the House of Representatives. In last year’s campaign, he declared as a core principle of his work in Congress. “All of our rights come from God, not from government,” he said. “America was founded upon the Christian principles contained in the Word of God.”
As a literalist Christian, Representative Broun believes that the Bible is the Word of God. So, why won’t he follow the Bible’s clear command about how to deal with lawsuits? It comes from Jesus himself, during the Sermon on the Mount:
“If any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.” – Bible, Book of Matthew, chapter 5, verse 40
The instructions of Jesus, accepted by Paul Broun as part of the Word of God, which he says should form the basis of law and government in the United States, are very clear: If someone files a lawsuit, the lawsuit should not be resisted, and the person being sued should pay even more than the damages that were requested. However, in spite of all Representative Broun’s talk about how he seeks to apply Christian principles to congressional legislation, he does not follow the teachings of Jesus when it comes to lawsuits.
Earlier this year, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was passed, in order to reduce resistance to lawsuits by workers who have been discriminated against on the job – a very Christian principle according to Matthew 5:40. Yet, Congressman Broun voted against the legislation. What’s more, Broun has campaigned in favor of tort reform which would make it more difficult for people to obtain compensation through lawsuits after being the victims of medical malpractice.
Paul Broun may talk about representing Christian values in Congress, but when it comes to tort reform, he stands directly against the teachings of Jesus.
