Meet George LeMieux

Posted on September 10 2009 by Congress Watcher

Meet George LeMieux, the newest member of the United States Senate, and the fifth member of the Senate to be appointed, rather than elected, this year. LeMieux took his Oath of Office this afternoon.

george lemieuxWhat can we tell you about LeMieux? Not much, given that he has never held political office. LeMieux once ran for a position in the Florida state House, but that was eleven years ago. The St. Petersburg Times reports a few issue positions from an issue questionnaire from that time.

LeMieux has taken a stand against expanded drilling along Florida’s shores, but that was a local issue. He did not oppose expanding offshore drilling outside his home state, a very convenient position to take.

LeMieux has agreed with the idea of adoptions by same-sex couples, and health benefits for such couples. Ultimately, however, he opposes same-sex marriage.

Fiscally, he toes the Republican Party line, saying that progressive taxation makes people not want to work. However, LeMieux has been working as a lawyer for corporate interests. Expect Senator LeMieux to promote special economic advantages for corporate executives – without worrying that protection of unearned bonuses and other extravagant perks not linked to performance will encourage the wealthy to become lazy.

His recent remarks are inanely vague: “I’m pro-family,” LeMieux has said. There’s a great deal of speculation about how this kind of vague statement will take practical form. For the next year and a half, we at That’s My Congress will be watching what Senator LeMieux actually does, and assembling notes on his record as part of our Senate Legislative Scorecard.

Isn’t it time to tell Representatives like George Lemieus of Florida that we cannot afford his pay check, not until we are in the black. It is hypocritical to spend money we don’t have on him and his payroll and Corps, for so many year, when he tells us today that they want to help the American people. This is HOGWASH. FLORIDA CAN DO BETTER THAN GEORGE LEMIEUS. I haven’t seen anything that he has done worthwhile for the American people. I have seen him vote and talk out of both sides of his mouth and nothing good has been done for all of Florida. Talk does not help
    Floridians.
