16 New Caucuses in the House of Representatives, June-July 2009

Posted on July 21 2009 by Congressional Aid

In the first six months of the 111th Congress, 235 caucuses in the House of Representatives registered formally with the Committee on House Administration as Congressional Membership Organizations. Since the beginning of June, 16 more CMOs have followed suit, bringing the current count of caucuses in the House of Representatives to 251. That’s more than one caucus for every two members of the House.

Crop of Trumbull's Declaration of Independence Painting, showing stodgy old white men caucusing, questioning...The formation, dissolution and relative activity of these caucuses is worth following, since they indicate the range and boundaries of active legislative interest in the Congress, and the transparency of various efforts. Who is willing to sign her name down as a devotee of an issue or constituency? To share information about the development of House caucuses over time, I note below the names of these 16 newly registered caucuses below, indicating caucus websites and lists of members where available. Where caucus information is not made available to the public, I’ve made note of that, too. Ask yourself why some issues go public while others remain cloaked. These caucuses have been added to our accumulated list of caucuses in the House for your broader reference.
