Democrats Join GOP To Thwart Equality in DC
Residents of Washington D.C. are organizing to legalize the practice of same-sex marriages there, and on Tuesday, July 7, same-sex marriages in other states will have official recognition in D.C..
Yet, some members of Congress are trying to put an end to the expansion of marriage equality to Washington D.C. In May, Republican U.S. Representative Jim Jordan introduced H.R.2608, a bill that would restrict the definition of marriage to include only relationships between one man and one woman.
It’s a piece of legislation that denies the constitutional right of equal protection under the law to same-sex couples, and also interferes with the ability of D.C. residents to express their values through representative government. Republicans like to talk about how they prefer local government to big federal government, but in this case, there are a lot of Republicans acting to the contrary.
51 Republicans have signed their name to the Jordan bill, but they’re not the only ones. 4 Democrats are also cosponsors. They are:
Dan Boren
Travis Childers
Jerry Costello
Mike McIntyre
