Paul Broun Runs And Hides From Climate Change

Posted on June 20 2009 by Congress Watcher

U.S. Representative Paul Broun needs to get a better sense of timing. This week, Broun introduced an amendment to a commerce appropriations bill. Broun’s amendment would have forbidden the spending of any funds included in the bill from being spent on a National Climate Service.

paul broun speakingIf funds from the bill were used to establish a National Climate Service, what would the problem be? Climate Change is a grave problem that’s ripping billions and billions of dollars out of the American economy every year, and putting large numbers of American lives at risk.

If Representative Broun really still doubts that, he ought to take a look at the new report, Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States, released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program on the very same day that Broun offered his amendment to try to block the establishment of a government center to deal with the many problems the report details. I urge you to go and take a look at the report – it’s full of footnotes referencing scientific research, population statistics, and other interesting and alarming facts.

Your statement that there is nothing about a National Climate Service in the House Appropriations bill is incorrect. The spending detail is always in the accompanying Report, see here: http://tinyurl.com/nhdaed

“Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) — The recommendation includes $426,675,000 for OAR operations, research and facilities, which is $32,470,000 above the request. The Committee supports NOAA’s efforts toward the creation of a National Climate Service and directs the agency to accelerate its current efforts with the additional funding provided in OAR and elsewhere within the bill.”

Seldom do they do line items anymore, but this gives NOAA the go-ahead to spend money on a NCS.
