Military Spending for the Sake of Military Spending
U.S. Representative Trent Franks has been called the most kooky member of Congress. Franks has earned a reputation for supporting the most extreme bits of legislation, while ignoring or opposing proposed laws that deal with the everyday concerns of most Americans.
This year, Congressman Franks has come up with a real doozy: H.J. Res. 23. This resolution would state, as U.S. government policy that the military budget should always be more than 4 percent of the gross domestic product.
Why? Why does Trent Franks think that the military budget should always be this high? Has he calculated that this amount is what’s needed to confront a particular threat? Is there some particular need that this resolution addresses?
Nope. H.J. Res. 23 merely proposes spending for the sake of spending. Instead of considering a military budget that actually matches real needs, Trent Franks just wants to throw a bunch of money at the Pentagon… and at the corporations that profit from military contracts.
Most ridiculous of all, the resolution proposed by Trent Franks doesn’t even have the power to change anything. As a resolution, and not a bill to actually create law, H.J. Res. 23 is nothing more than a toothless policy statement. If Representative Franks really believes in requiring huge amounts of military spending just for the sake of using up lots of money, why didn’t he actually create a law to enact his extravagant budgetary goals?
With H.J. Res. 23, Trent Franks manages to take an extremist pose without actually getting anything done. Once more, we see that the Franks agenda is made up of a bizarre mix of radicalism and ineffectiveness. If we weren’t in the middle of an economic crisis, these kinds of antics would be entertaining. However, times are hard, and the 2nd congressional district of Arizona deserves better than to be represented by a politician who is unable to get anything done for them in Washington D.C., because of his ideological antics.

Absolutely nutty. Trent Franks is an absolute nut!
I would like to see Trent Franks removed from office. It is a joke that he represents us in District 2 or that he represents the state of Arizona. He continues to embarrass us in the decisions he makes and how he votes in the House.
Yep, the man’s wacky. Unfortunately, I live in his district. Because of the way the district has been drawn up by the Republican state legislature, it is vertically impossible to get this nut out. If anyone out there has any incriminating information on him, please email me.
