Our Seals and Their Seals
This week, the Senate passed S. Res. 84, a resolution that calls upon Canada to outlaw the hunting of seals and urges Europe to ban trade in seal products. The resolution was passed by voice vote.
That’s all well and good, but Canada is Canada, and Europe is Europe. The United States is another thing. What about our own seals?
The USA has ribbon seals, ringed seals and hawaiian monk seals – all endangered species. We used to have the caribbean monk seal as well – but last year it was declared extinct.
Instead of just telling other countries what they ought to do with their seals, why doesn’t the U.S. Congress take some action to protect the seals that are struggling to survive in US waters?
