Earth Hour And Lasting Change
Last night saw the celebration of Earth Hour all around the world. For one hour, people turned off their electrical lights in observance of the need to conserve electricity, showing their commitment to confronting climate change.
Alcee Hastings spoke to Congress at the end of last week about the importance of Earth Hour, saying, “by participating in Earth Hour here in the U.S., it sends a message that Americans care about climate change and stand with the rest of the world in raising awareness about this escalating crisis. With every flick of a light-switch, a vote is cast for meaningful action.”
Meaningful action? Maybe, maybe not. I have a friend who participated in Earth Hour, not long after sitting in front of his television set all morning watching Forumla One racing.
When it comes to energy conservation, we have a long way to go.
