Vito Fossella Infidelity to the Constitution Matters More
Yes, Republican Congressman Vito Fossella drove drunk. Yes, he cheated on his wife and kept a secret mistress and love child in Virginia. That’s not what concerns me.
Vito Fossella has shown a much more disturbing kind of infidelity: Faithlessness to his oath of office to uphold and defend the Constitution.
Earlier this year, Representative Fossella introduced H.R.5440, a bill that would have allowed George W. Bush to conduct physical and electronic searches and spying operations against American citizens without establishing any just cause for those searches and spying operations. In other words, Fossella’s bill would have allowed the President of the United States to snoop in on the private affairs of American citizens on a whim.
That’s the kind of unfaithfulness I’m worried about. On Election Day this year, I hope that Congressman Fossella’s constituents keep his constitutional infidelities in mind as much as they think about his personal failings.
