The Deeper Offenses of Vito Fossella
I admit that I was tempted to write an article of outrage about Congressman Vito Fossella’s arrest this week on charges of drunken driving. However, thinking about it for a moment, I realized that Congressman Fossella’s reckless endangerment of other human beings was merely a personally reprehensible act. It doesn’t have anything to do with his position in public office. Representative Fossella did not vote while drunk, after all.
No, Vito Fossella has committed worse offenses – such as spreading false propaganda about torture at Guantanamo Bay. Vito Fossella brought the news back to American voters that prisoners at Guantanamo were treated very well – after he took a tour of the prison pre-arranged, by the Bush White House, and escorted by armed guards who didn’t allow him to actually talk to any of the prisoners. There was plenty of notice for the Guantanamo Bay prison to clean up and prepare a good show for Fossella, of course. The Bush White House used Congressman Fossella as a chump, and Fossella seemed either unaware or unbothered by that.
After Vito Fossella’s visit to Guantanamo Bay, a great deal of evidence emerged to confirm that Fossella’s forwarded propaganda of good times at Guantanamo was not justified. Torture has been used at Guantanamo, and that torture was approved by George W. Bush himself.
Next to aiding and abetting in torture, drunk driving is kid’s stuff.
