Democrat Michael Arcuri Joins Republicans To Promote Torture

It’s bad enough that many turncoat Democratic members of Congress, like senators Joseph Lieberman and Bill Nelson, and Representatives Tim Holden and John Salazar supported George W. Bush and agreed to help him push HR 6166 and S 3930 through the United States Congress to create a new law, the infamous Military Commissions Act.

The MCA does the following:

  • Revokes habeas corpus
  • Gives President Bush the power to declare any person an “enemy”, and then to throw that person into prison without any criminal charge
  • Legalizes the use of torture in prisons run by President Bush
  • Gives amnesty to George W. Bush and top military leaders for war crimes they have committed
  • Creates kangaroo courts in which secret evidence obtained through torture and coercion is admissable, and defendants do not even have the right to know the nature of the crimes of which they are accused.

    What makes it worse is that many of the Democrats running for Congress this year jumped on the bandwagon and have declared that they will join George W. Bush, and abandon the mainstream Democratic Party.

    Among these Democratic candidates for Congress is Michael Arcuri, who is running in Upstate New York’s 24th congressional district. Last week, at a debate, Mike Arcuri said he supports the horrific new law, and yesterday, Arcuri repeated that he supports the law.

    It gets even worse. Michael Arcuri has admitted that he supports the law to revoke habeas corpus and allow torture even though he has not gotten around to actually reading the legislation.

    That’s right - Michael Arcuri promises, if he is elected to Congress, to vote for laws promoted by George W. Bush without even bothering to read them. And he dares to call himself a Democrat?

    Michael Arcuri cannot be trusted. The Arcuri for Congress campaign does not deserve our support.
