Senate Democrats Betray Freedom of Speech
Remember about a week or so ago, when the Senate Democratic leadership came out with a media offensive blasting the Senate Republicans for wasting valuable time in the Senate by introducing two frivolous amendments to the United States Constitution to ban flag desecration and same-sex marriage? Remember Harry Reid telling you that America had more important things to do, and the Republicans ought to be ashamed of themselves?
There was something they didn’t tell you: Nine Senate Democrats signed up to support the constitutional amendment to ban the desecration of the American flag.
The following Democrats have co-sponsored the Constitutional amendment to make an exception for free speech rights when it comes to the national flag of the USA.
- Mark Dayton of Minnesota
- John Rockefeller of West Virginia
- Mary Landrieu of Louisiana
- Tim Johnson of South Dakota
- Dianne Feinstein of California
- Ken Salazar of Colorado
- Ben Nelson of Nebraska
- Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas
- Max Baucus of Montana
So, Harry Reid, if the Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting this frivolous constitutional amendment, shouldn’t this large group of Democratic senators be ashamed of themselves too?
Well, of course they should. These Democrats in the Senate just prove the point, again, that we cannot count of the Democrats in Congress to do the right thing, even when it should be a no-brainer.
Boy, oh, boy is this issue a no-brainer. There’s a good reason that the Senate is offering this ban on flag desecration as an amendment to the United States Constitution: Right now, such a ban would be clearly unconstitutional. Why? Well, that’s simple. The very first amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, the first item in the Bill of Rights, guarantees absolute freedom of speech, with no exceptions.
The new amendment proposed by the Republicans and supported by the nine Democrats listed above would reduce your right to freedom of speech.
That’s what these 9 Democrats in the United States Senate have co-sponsored, along with the Republicans: An attack on your freedom.
Are you still so sure that just getting the Democrats back into the majority in Congress will make all the problems of the last six years go away? Don’t bet on it. We progressives have to be smart, and we need to start working on getting rid of the right wing Democrats holding seats in Congress as well.
