Members of the House of Representatives for the 112th Congress

Rankings, Profiles, News and Campaign Contribution Data for members of the House of Representatives in the 112th Congress, brought to you by That's My Congress and Irregular Times.

Methodology
Congressional scorecards at That's My Congress are generated from observations of roll call voting and bill cosponsorship behavior during the 112th Congress.
The Liberal Action Score for a member of Congress is calculated as the percentage of a slate of possible liberal actions that were actually taken by that member. The liberal standard for judging bills is defined according to these conditions:
  • Respect for constitutional protections of American civil liberty
  • Transparency and public access in government
  • Equal treatment of people under law
  • The respect and pursuit of empirical knowledge through support for science and education
  • Protection of the Earth's environmental richness
  • Strengthening of economic opportunity for all
  • Pursuit of peaceful solutions and opposition to militarism in policy

The Conservative Action Score for a member of Congress is calculated as percentage of a slate of possible conservative actions that were actually taken by that member. The conservative standard for judging bills is defined according to these conditions:
  • Disregard for constitutional protections of American civil liberty
  • Secrecy and exclusion of citizens from government
  • Support for discriminatory policy
  • The symbolic denigration and practical undermining of science and education in America
  • Active harm to the environment or passive allowance for environmental destruction
  • Pursuit of further advantage for those in America who are already its richest
  • Dismissal of peaceful possibilities and obeiscance to the military-industrial complex

The Net Congressional Score is calculated by subtracting the Conservative Action Score from the Liberal Action Score. The result is a number ranging from -100 (an absolute and total conservative) to +100 (an absolute and total liberal).

Recent news from Capitol Hill regarding the House of Representatives:

The Ideology Of Democrats Who Voted To Hold Eric Holder In Contempt
There was a reasonable, liberal rationale for Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote in favor of the Republican-led resolution to cite Attorney General Eric Holder as in contempt of Congress. Eric Holder is attempting to thwart the oversight powers of Congress by refusing to turn over documents requested by Congress. Barack Obama has followed in the footsteps of George W. Bush by asserting the constitutionally-unjustified power of Executive Privilege to ignore oversight by Congress. These are the kinds of seizures of power that Democrats opposed, when they were committed... [more]

Name That Congressional Peacenik
"I continue to be amazed that both sides want to continue to spend $10 billion a month in Afghanistan. It is borrowed money from the Chinese, and there is no concern. We just spend more and more money to support President Karzai, who is a corrupt leader... The American people have said in poll after poll: Bring our troops home now. As many as 72 to 73 percent of the American people say bring our people home now. Our soldiers have won the war. Bin Laden is dead; al Qaeda is dispersed." This statement, against continuing the war in Afghanistan, was made on the floor of the U.S. House... [more]

Does Super PAC Pay Aguilar Family Member's Salary on Ground Campaign?
One of the very few limitations of an independent expenditure made by a Super PAC under the new rules for campaign finance after the Citizens United is that the Super PACs cannot coordinate their spending with political candidates' campaigns. This legal barrier has been stretched paper thin by many campaigns, with campaign managers supposedly resigning, only in order to manage Super PACs that spend in sync with the official campaign strategy. is she related to pete aguilarmore]

Silly Season And Serious Season In The U.S. House
Serious work by the U.S. House of Representatives was represented in some of the legislation introduced there yesterday. For example, the new bill H.R. 5749 would create a prohibition on the transfer of U.S. military goods and services to the governments of foreign countries that are found to be "engaging in gross violations of internationally-recognized human rights". Standing up for the liberty of people around the world is an important task. The initial supporters of H.R. 5749 are: Raul Grijalva, John... [more]

The Anti-Gay Democrats Of the House of Representatives
This week, the House of Representatives approved an amendment to H.R. 5326, forbidding the President from directing the Department of Justice to resist the Defense of Marriage Act. It was a merely symbolic vote, because the Obama Administration is not using the Department of Justice to oppose the implementation of the Defense of Marriage Act. The message of the amendment was clear: There are still many people in Congress who are dedicated to standing against equal rights for gay and lesbian Americans. Among the anti-gay politicians voting for this bill of bigotry were 16 congressional Democrats: more]

XL Pipeline Push For 2 Months Unemployment A Terrible Exchange
The XL pipeline is a proposed project to lay a giant tube across the middle of the United States like a belt, a conduit for thick crude oil extracted from the Alberta tar sands flowing south across the Ogllala Aquifer all the way down to Texas, where the oil can be refined in order to be sold for burning. Current environmental protections clearly forbid such a project, but corporations from the fossil fuels industry have been pushing the Obama White House to create special waivers of those protections... Pete DeFazio Takes On Wasteful Military Spending
Republicans like to talk in general terms about cutting government waste, but it's a congressional Democrat, Pete DeFazio, who has the guts to get specific. DeFazio is going after the single biggest source of wasteful spending in the federal government: The U.S. military. "This year," DeFazio explained on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, "the Pentagon will spend $670 billion, about $2 million... [more]

Bill In Congress Would Convert Churches Into Partisan Political Machines
This week, the House of Representatives has seen the quiet introduction of legislation that, if signed into law, would cast aside a law that has for generations kept churches, and other tax-exempt organizations, separate from partisan political campaigns for public office. The bill, H.R. 3600, was introduced by Republican Walter Jones and Democrat Emanuel Cleaver. The... [more]

Congress Can't Pass Jobs Bill - Too Busy Helping Sailboat Race For The Rich
Another week goes by, and still there's no action in Congress on any reasonable legislation to promote job growth in the United States. Why can't Congress get a jobs bill together? They're working on other, more important things... ... like helping rich folks race sailboats. the rich want to racemore]

List of the 163 Democrats Who Spent Time Promoting Theocracy Instead Of Creating Jobs
The Democratic Party has promised us that it would do whatever it takes to create jobs and improve the economy. Democrats in Congress said that they would work to get a good jobs bill passed, and not waste time with frivolous matters. That's not what happened this week. This week, the House of Representatives spent the better part of a day debating, and then voting on, a resolution that has no force in law, but declares that "the people of the... [more]
